Hello my beautiful people and welcome back!
Today we are going to talk about those fabulous reproduction mcm patterns. And what I mean with this is: the ones that we are now choosing for curtains, wall paper, bedding, rugs, etc.
So I have seen a ton of pictures of people who are not capable of choosing the one that they like the most and run with it. Most people that are using these very bold patterns are using them one on top of the other, on top of color, on top of classic patterns, etc :S.
And while I understand that the new blend of styles are using bold colors, pattern over pattern, and so forth there has to be a cohesive design in order for it to look pleasing to the eye. I believe one of the main reasons why we get so many people posting pictures online and asking what do you think? Is because even though they love individually what they have once it is all together in a room there is something that doesn’t feel right. And believe me, I have done this as well, we all have. Especially when we have been collecting or changing homes for a while and our home now has a mix of absolutely everything we have bought in 20+ years.
So I have 3 tips to use these bold patterns in your mcm homes in order for them to look good.
1.Mixing pattern sizes: So what I find most cohesive is to use a large pattern as a feature, then pick a medium or small pattern that would complement it. These patterns can be complementing colors or complementing designs, the only thing we need to keep in mind is to use a large print as the main feature and then use a medium or a small pattern as secondary for accents like curtains, accent chairs, cushions, etc.
2. Pick colors from the patterns: from the large pattern, you picked as a feature, pick a secondary color that it’s within the pattern that might complement it or that you might use in the rest of the room. This point is very important because a lot of the times I see
examples of somebody who already has a very bold geometric pattern rug and then they choose fabric for the curtains that is an equally busy, equally bold colored fabric and then they clash because they’re not using a cohesive color pallet or a color that they pick from whatever print they had first.
At the same time, if you were going to just choose a totally new pattern then you need to be able to get rid of the old pattern you had in the space, so don’t put use pattern on top of the pattern on top of pattern that is not cohesive just because you already have it. You might find a place for that rug or the old curtains in a different space in your house where it might be featured as a staple of the period. *Now if you want to build from what you already have, then you have to use the bold color or print as your springboard and everything else you add has to compliment that original pattern.
3. Contrast your large pieces: Through looking at pictures of so many rooms with this mistake, I have decided to be radical about this point. I honestly was going to say simply if you have a dark large pattern rug then choose a light color sofa or a light color coffee table, but while I was writing this I have decided to advise you to stay away from dark brown and black sofas. Even if you have a brown mcm pattern, I would suggest going lighter with your furniture pieces. Please note this applies to brown and black only. Dark blue, Dark green, etc is fine. To me, brown and black sofas, end tables, and coffee tables, just simply suck the light and energy out of the room. NOTE: and if you already bought a black or brown sofa then you have options.
- Use lots of contrasting pillows
- Recover the seat and back loose cushions
- Use lots of blankets
If you are still going to buy a brown sofa, always go for a light to medium tone of brown. The cognac tone of brown leather actually goes with pretty much everything.
And that is all friends.
I sincerely hope we all receive all the wonderful things and many blessings in the new year.
See you in 2021!
